Recently I volunteered to help an old roommate do some visual development for her graduate thesis film, a steam-punk contemporary interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood. I worked on the design of the little girl (named Elsie), and now I'm working on some layouts. Character design was pretty smooth-sailing, but boy are layouts something I need practice on.

I'm working on a rough color test for the last sketch, but rendering layouts is a completely new process to me. Pretty frustrating, but a good learning process.
More sketches as they come! In the meantime, here's the production blog for the film:

It's really cool to see what the other members are coming up with, since I don't actually get to work with them in person.

October Sketch Dump
Various sketches of Kei (at various ages), as well as some profiles, commission sketches, and some fantasy scenery. I was at my desk at work needing a break, and wanted to draw some landscapes that included some of the stuff on it, like speakers and a computer mouse. Kinda silly but I liked the way it was going.

Dump?
I don't sketch nearly enough (non-work related stuff) anymore, but here's a sample of my most recent stuff:
I admit I drew the girl on the upper right after watching Ke$ha's alternate video for Take It Off. As shameful as it is, I can't help but love over-the-top outfits and crazy face paint. The picture in the middle will hopefully be completed in time for Halloween... =_=; It's been ages since I drew Kei.

Colors
Besides all the commissions and stuff I've been posting on my DeviantArt, I've been working on some colored covers for my friend's comic:
Working with other people's lines are always challenging for me, but well worth the time. You know what else is well worth your time? Checking out Gifted.

July dump
In a pitiful attempt to keep my promise of updating more periodically, here's my July sketch dump:
I've been pumping out at least one colored drawing a week (mostly commissions), but because I need that fast turn-around I don't have a whole lot of time to sketch and explore each one before I lay down the final lines. The stuff on the upper right corner is for a drawing I've been working on and off for a while now, while the stuff below it is a concept for a series of girls with kimonos inspired by different fish. If you've been following my stuff for any amount of time you might be able to catch Kei, my Vespa girl, in there too.
Also, bonus picture!
Here's what the sketches on the bottom left corner turned into. It's a commission for an artist I really like on DA, so I got real excited about it <3

Oops
I've neglected this blog for almost 2 months, and THAT'S where I draw the line. Since I graduated SCAD, I moved to Charlotte, NC and started my internship at a full-service motion graphics/animation/editing studio, and that's been keeping me pretty busy for the last month and a half. I have been doing a lot of drawing, but since I don't have any sketches scanned at the moment I'll show off some of my commission work:
(old - new)
As you can see, I'm being asked to draw a lot of girls. I love it! <3 More sketches coming soon, just so I'm not reposting what I already have on my DA account.

Animation Reel
Since I put it up on my website and stuff, I figure I might as well also put up my animation reel on my blog. I finally feel like I have stuff to show people what I do now, and it feels quite nice.

I officially have a website! Sorry I haven't updated with anything; I have sketches I want to upload but I need this site done for class so it took priority. But seriously, check it:

Stationery
The biggest thing I'm working on in class right now is creating a submission package to send to studios when I'm job hunting. The package includes printed materials like business cards, flatbooks, resumes, and letterheads, as well as long and short reels and a website. An important part of the package is essentially branding myself so I have a constant "look" on all items that people can recognize. My look is turning quite pink and sparkly, as was expected:
My business card (with contact information removed for privacy reasons: normally I would have my phone number, website address, and email going along 3 rays):
My flatbook front/ back cover (same thing with contact info, with the back cover being the same deal as in my business card and on the front cover I have the same info written on the bottom white bar):
My letterhead (contact info normally written in white on bottom bar):
I'm actually pretty excited to have this all printed out at the end of the quarter; I feel so professional already! ;)

Sketch Dump
I had to scan a whole bunch of drawings to put into my flatbook, so I'll post some select pages here:
Some 2 minute gestures. There's this one model we have who's really good, and gives us some really dynamic poses to work with. It really bums me out when I go to a session and find the model is not him. :(
A collection of animal sketches. I'm really bad with drawing animals, so I hope to keep more of these coming. The hamsters on the bottom right are mine, and the rest are animals I saw on Planet Earth.
An assortment of Cleo sketches. Some are just sketches for fun, others are thumbnails for my animation assignments.

Storyboards
I'm currently in the process of putting together a flatbook and recently realized that all the examples of storyboards I've done are all sketchy and unimpressive to look at. So to fix this I took some boards for my senior film and added color and re-worked the layouts to make them read clearer.
In the next few days I'll definitely be putting up more portfolio-related stuff, so I suspect there will be more boards, sketches, etc to come.

Commission comprete
Just an update, since I uploaded the lineart a few days ago:
It's been a while since I drew such an anime-like character, but it really provided a nice break from all the school work. Also, I've really fallen in love with pink shadows. So much fun!

Commish
Here is another $15 commission I'm working on. This is just the line-art, but you can tell already that she's adorable * ^_^ *
I've been kept pretty busy with school-work, hence the infrequent updates, but I assure you I'm doing a lot of drawing. By Monday I'll have a little animated exercise to post too, so that should be pretty exciting.

Back to school
My first assignment of the quarter:
Our class had to design/develop one out of a list of 4 iconic figures: Rumplestiltzkin, Cleopatra, Genghis Khan, or Sherlock Holmes and then work with him/her for the rest of the quarter. Hopefully I'll have clips of my Cleo animated and doing exciting things in the near future.

Progress...
...Of a commission I'm working on. This is only the lineart; the color will come once I get approval from the commissioner. I'm having such a fun time with the character since she's so adorable!

faster, faster!
I'm starting to pick up the habit of laying down really minimal gestures on paper and then moving straight into inking/coloring on the computer in an effort to save time but also because I always want to be coloring ASAP. Mostly the latter.
Sketch:
Color:
I also like having the freedom to mess with the drawing in the inking stage; I feel less constricted with my looser sketches. For those of you who illustrate digitally, how do you like to go from beginning to end?

Dump
Sketch dump, that is.
These should all be from February, I think. I've started leaving my pencil sketches really rough and going straight into inking in photoshop from there (the Burlesque girls are relatively detailed, but...), so it's interesting to see how different these look cleaned up.

Senior Film: Rough Animation
I thought I had posted this earlier, but apparently not. Here is more or less the final cut for my film with all the rough animation. A couple shots have been changed (perspective-wise, not content), but all in all this is it. Hopefully I'll be putting up some cleaned up shots (not all, but some) here later as well.
Trust me, I'm a lot further along in production than what you see here.

Fanartsssss
A quick image of a drawing I'm doing on the side. She belongs to a friend of mine, who gave me the opportunity to work with his adorable characters when I was so sick of drawing fat old men. I'm going to make this one count, since I can almost see myself going through girly-drawing withdrawal.

Oy
The last time I updated this blog was December 17th. That's over a month ago. I should win some award for totally missing the point of having a blog.
But having said that, I have worked on a lot stuff since I last updated. Mostly school stuff, which is why I haven't felt the urge to post anything, but I think it's about time I commence in having a sketch dump.
The first three are final colored layouts for my film. You may notice that there have been some stylistic changes:
And then here's something I sketched during class:
Fun times. My days now consist of diligently cleaning up the animation for my film and playing some pokemon in between. I have a couple more stuff in the works though so my unofficial blog hiatus is now hopefully over >_<;;
